INFORMATION FOR CLIENTS HAVING AN ASSESSMENT

 PREPARING FOR THE ASSESSMENT

  • Aim to arrive at the assessment 5 – 10 minutes before the scheduled time so you are not rushed or stressed when you arrive.
  • If you normally use a hearing aid or wear glasses for reading, ensure you bring these to the assessment.
  • Bring a list of your current medications.
  • If you have copies of any reports provided by doctors or other therapists, it can be useful to bring these to the assessment. If not, the neuropsychologist may ask for your consent to obtain copies of these documents directly from your doctors and/or therapists.
  • Water and coffee / tea will be provided. You can stop for short breaks during the assessment, and you are welcome to bring lunch or a snack to eat during these breaks.
  • Avoid consuming any alcohol on the day of the assessment, and avoid large quantities of alcohol the day prior to the assessment.
  • Avoid taking any non-prescribed medications and illicit drugs during the week prior to the assessment.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE ASSESSMENT

A Neuropsychological Assessment takes approximately 4 hours to complete and involves:

  • Interview with the client.
  • Completing a range of tasks to assess different areas of cognitive function, including memory & intellectual skills. Assessment tasks include verbally responding to questions and paper-and-pencil tasks.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE ASSESSMENT

Comprehensive neuropsychological assessment reports are prepared.

To help with preparation of the report, the neuropsychologist may seek the client’s consent to speak with individuals including doctors, other therapists working with the client, and family members.
